Ashiya occupies a thin band of land between Kobe and Nishinomiya, running from the slopes of the Rokko mountains down to Osaka Bay. The Ashiya River cuts through the city from north to south, and three railway lines, JR, Hankyu and Hanshin, cross it from east to west at different heights on the slope. On a map, the pattern looks like a ladder of horizontal lines.
The city is known as one of the most affluent residential areas in Japan, with quiet streets of large houses on the hillside, particularly in the Rokurokuso area. The riverbanks are lined with cherry trees that draw visitors every spring. The city's development in the early twentieth century was closely tied to the railways connecting Osaka and Kobe.
At the southern edge, the reclaimed Ashiyahama district extends into the bay with its own planned layout and apartment towers.
