Asmara sits high on the Eritrean plateau, at well over two thousand metres. Its centre is laid out on a clear plan, with a main avenue running east to west and a regular grid of streets on either side. Around that core, older neighbourhoods and later developments fill the gently rolling ground, and the street pattern loosens as it moves outward toward the edge of the highlands.
Much of the central city was built during the Italian colonial period, particularly in the 1930s, and it contains an unusual concentration of modernist architecture, from cinemas and cafés to service stations. The Fiat Tagliero building, with its cantilevered wings, is the best known. In 2017 Asmara was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site as a modernist African city.
