Ādīgrat lies in the far north of Ethiopia's Tigray region, on a high plateau well over two thousand metres above sea level, not far from the border with Eritrea. On a map the town gathers around the main road that runs north from Mekelle toward the frontier. Side streets branch off it and thin out into open, rocky country broken by ridges and dry watercourses.
Its position has long made it a crossroads town, a stop for trade and travel between the Ethiopian highlands and the routes further north. Adigrat is also a religious centre and the seat of a Catholic eparchy. It is home to Adigrat University as well, which has added new campus buildings and streets on the edge of the older town.
