Aso lies in Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, inside the caldera of Mount Aso. The caldera is one of the largest in the world, a huge basin ringed by steep outer walls. The city spreads along the northern valley floor within that ring. Rice fields, rail line and roads all run parallel to the crater rim.
In the centre of the caldera stand the central cones of Aso, including Nakadake, an active crater that often releases steam and gas. On a map the rim forms a vast enclosing curve. The city's streets fill only a small part of the flat land inside it, while the slopes above are covered in grassland and forest.
Aso Shrine, one of the oldest shrines in Kyushu, stands in the city. Its gate was badly damaged in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes and has since been restored. An Aso map poster shows a city living inside a volcano, with its streets drawn against one of the country's most dramatic landscapes.

Northern valley
Aso's streets, the JR line and farmland stretch along the flat caldera floor. The arrangement is long and linear, set between the rim and the central peaks.
Central cones
Nakadake and the neighbouring peaks rise at the centre of the caldera. Their slopes and access roads draw a distinct cluster of lines above the city.
