Aţ Ţafīlah is the capital of Tafilah Governorate in southern Jordan, built on slopes at the western edge of the highland plateau. Just beyond the town the ground falls sharply toward the Dead Sea rift and Wadi Araba. The street pattern follows the contours, bending around hillsides and switching back along the steeper ground.
Olive groves and terraced plots surround the built-up area, and springs in the nearby valleys have long supported farming here. The King's Highway, the ancient north–south route through Jordan's hills, passes through the town. It forms the main thread from which the rest of the street plan hangs.
The governorate also contains the Dana Biosphere Reserve, Jordan's largest nature reserve, whose sandstone and granite landscapes descend toward the desert. Contour streets
Many streets follow the slope, not a grid, curving in tiers around the hillsides. This gives the map a layered look that reflects the steep terrain.

West of the town the land drops toward the rift valley. Roads there turn into tight bends as they descend, and settlement thins out quickly.
