Athi River lies in Machakos County on the open plains south-east of Nairobi, and its map is organised by transport. The Mombasa Road runs through the area as a major artery, joined by the Standard Gauge Railway and older rail lines. The Athi River itself winds across the plains in a shallow, irregular course. Around these lines, housing estates, factories and warehouse plots fill the flat ground.
The town has grown as an industrial and residential overflow for the capital. It has an export processing zone, cement production and a steadily expanding population of commuters. It is part of the wider Mavoko area, and it faces open grassland that was traditionally grazing and wildlife country.
