Azrou lies in the Middle Atlas of Morocco, where the road from Meknes and Fes climbs into the mountains toward Midelt and the south. The town's name comes from the Amazigh word for rock, after the large outcrop that stands beside it. On a map, streets pack into a hollow and climb the surrounding slopes.
The layout comes from the terrain. Roads come together at a central junction, the older lanes of the medina fold around it, and newer neighbourhoods spread up the hillsides. Beyond the town, the map turns to forest and high pasture, with narrow roads winding into the hills.
