Babati is the capital of Tanzania's Manyara Region and sits on the Great North Road between Arusha and Dodoma, in the highlands along the Great Rift Valley. On the map, the town's streets gather around the main road, and Lake Babati lies just to the south with its compact, rounded shoreline.
The lake is known locally for its hippos and draws visitors on canoe trips and walks. Mount Kwaraa rises nearby, and the surrounding land is mostly smallholder farming. Babati is also a common stop for travellers heading to Tarangire National Park and the Hanang area further along the road.
