Bắc Kạn sits in a narrow valley in the mountains of northeastern Vietnam, near the upper course of the Cầu River. From above, the town is a thin band of streets that follows the water. The grid breaks up wherever the slopes close in. Past the last houses, the map fills with folds of forest and small fields tucked into the valley floors.
For decades the town was the capital of its own province. In 2025 that province was merged into Thai Nguyen as part of Vietnam's administrative reform. The wider area is known for Ba Bể Lake, a mountain lake inside a national park to the northwest, and for the Tày communities whose villages are spread through the surrounding valleys.
A Bắc Kạn map poster works because the landscape does most of the composing. The river gives the sheet a clear spine, bridges join the two banks, and the hills around the edges become quiet grey texture. Steep wooded ridges rise on all sides, so the built-up area stops abruptly. Within a short distance the poster changes from street pattern to open terrain.
