Bagnols-sur-Cèze lies in the north-east of the Gard department, where the Cèze river crosses the plain on its way to the Rhône. From above, the old town is easy to find: a tight, roughly oval group of narrow streets around a central square, surrounded by boulevards that follow the line of the former walls.
The town grew considerably in the twentieth century after the Marcoule nuclear site opened nearby. Planned residential districts were added on the slopes around the medieval centre. This gives the map two very different patterns: the dense, irregular lanes of the old town and the wider, more regular blocks of the postwar neighbourhoods.
