Chamrousse sits on the western edge of the Belledonne range in Isère, high above Grenoble. The resort has two main centres, Recoin and Roche-Béranger, at different altitudes and linked by a road through the forest. On a map, both appear as compact groups of buildings among slopes, lift lines and open ground.
Chamrousse hosted the alpine skiing events of the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, where Jean-Claude Killy won all three men's races. Higher up, the Lacs Robert sit in a small hollow of the mountain and make a popular summer walk. The commune is small, so almost everything lies within easy reach of the lifts.
