Les Deux Alpes sits in the Oisans massif of the Isère department, on a high shelf of land between the Romanche and Vénéon valleys. From above the resort is long and narrow. A main street runs the length of the plateau, with hotels and apartments packed along both sides. To the east, the slopes rise steadily toward the Mont-de-Lans glacier.
The name comes from the two alpine pastures, belonging to Mont-de-Lans and Venosc, on which the resort was built. Its glacier, with skiing up to about 3,600 metres, is among the largest skiable glaciers in Europe and has long been used for summer skiing and snowboarding. An ice cave carved into the glacier is one of its landmarks.
A Les Deux Alpes map poster emphasises the resort's elongated shape: the main street and its side roads in the centre, the steep drops on either side into deep valleys, and the lift lines climbing toward the glacier. The hairpin road up from the Romanche valley adds a memorable graphic element along the lower edge.
