Balik Pulau, meaning roughly "back of the island", lies in the southwestern part of Penang Island, on the opposite side of the hills from George Town. On a map the town sits in a valley, with a small centre where roads meet and a spread of villages, orchards and fields reaching toward the western coast.
The area is known for its agriculture rather than its buildings. Durian orchards and nutmeg plantations cover the hill slopes, and Balik Pulau durians are prized across Malaysia. Paddy fields and fishing villages occupy the flatter land near the sea, giving the district a rural character unusual on such a developed island.
