Balod is the headquarters of Balod district in central Chhattisgarh. The district was created in 2012. From above, the town is a compact settlement set in a wide agricultural plain, and the pattern of the surrounding fields is almost as visible as the streets themselves. Roads leave the centre in several directions and connect it to the villages around.
The town's layout is typical of a market centre in this region. There is a dense core of lanes and small blocks, with newer construction spreading more loosely along the main roads.
