Bārdoli lies in Surat district in southern Gujarat, on a fertile plain east of the city of Surat. From above, it appears as a compact town with a dense centre of irregular streets, surrounded by newer residential areas and wide agricultural land. Roads radiate outward toward nearby villages, crossing a patchwork of fields that reaches to the horizon.
The town holds an important place in Indian history. In 1928 it was the centre of the Bardoli Satyagraha, a peasant movement against increased land taxes, led by Vallabhbhai Patel. The campaign's success earned him the title Sardar, by which he is still remembered. Today, Bārdoli is known for sugarcane farming and its cooperative sugar industry.
