Barking lies in East London, where the River Roding widens into Barking Creek before joining the Thames. The old town centre sits near the head of the creek, and from there the streets spread out in the dense Victorian and interwar patterns typical of this part of London. Railway lines and the A13 cut across the area in long, straight lines toward the east.
Barking is one of the oldest settlements in the London area. Barking Abbey was founded in the seventh century and was one of the most important nunneries in England; its ruins and the surviving Curfew Tower remain near the town centre. Barking is now part of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, and the Barking Riverside development is creating a new district on former industrial land along the Thames.
