Barra de Santo Antônio is on the northern coast of Alagoas, north of Maceió. Its name describes its location: a barra, or river mouth, where the Santo Antônio river reaches the Atlantic. Seen from above, the town sits on a narrow strip of land between the estuary and the open sea, with water on more than one side.
The map is mostly about water and edges. The Atlantic shoreline runs as a long, gently curving line. Inland, the river widens into an estuary with branching channels and low wetland, and the town's compact streets fill the dry ground between the two, with more scattered building beyond.
