Batāla stands on the flat plains of the Majha region in Punjab, northeast of Amritsar. On a map there is little relief to interrupt the town: its shape comes from roads converging on an older, tightly packed centre, with newer neighbourhoods and industrial areas spreading outward toward the surrounding fields. The railway line passes along one side, adding another strong straight element.
The town holds an important place in Sikh history. It is associated with the wedding of Guru Nanak, marked by gurdwaras in the town that draw many visitors on the anniversary.
