Bauchi lies on the plains of northeastern Nigeria, below the edge of the Jos Plateau. From above, the city spreads outward from an older core in a loose pattern of streets and compounds, and major roads run out toward other state capitals. Beyond the built area, farmland and scrubland stretch in all directions, with rocky outcrops scattered across the plain.
The city was founded in the early nineteenth century and became the seat of the Bauchi Emirate. Today it is the capital of Bauchi State. The older parts of town around the emir's palace have dense, irregular street patterns. Newer districts, government areas and campuses follow more regular layouts.
Bauchi is also the usual starting point for visitors to Yankari National Park, which lies some distance to the southeast and is known for its elephants and the warm Wikki Springs.
