Jos sits on the Jos Plateau in central Nigeria at an elevation of about 1,200 metres, high enough to give it a noticeably cooler climate than most of the country. The land is broken by granite hills and boulder outcrops, and the city's streets bend around them, so the map has an irregular, organic texture rather than a neat grid.
The city grew in the early twentieth century around tin mining, and the industry left behind a landscape of former pits, many now filled with water as ponds and small lakes scattered around the outskirts. Jos is the capital of Plateau State and home to a national museum and a wildlife park on the edge of town.
