Béja is the capital of its governorate in northern Tunisia. In Roman times it was known as Vaga, and it has long been a trading town for the Medjerda valley, one of the country's main wheat-growing areas. The town is built on the slopes of a hill, which gives it a compact, tiered shape rather than a flat grid.
On the map the old medina appears as a dense tangle of lanes on the higher ground, near the site of the kasbah. Newer streets run down the slopes and along the main roads, with more regular blocks at the bottom of the hill. Beyond them the land opens into farmland and the broad valley to the south.
