Belgrade stands at the confluence of the Sava and the Danube. Seen from above, the meeting of the rivers explains the city. The old town fills a wedge of high ground between them, and at the tip Kalemegdan fortress looks out over the joined waters. Streets in the historic centre run along the ridge and down its slopes toward both banks.
Across the Sava lies New Belgrade, built largely after the Second World War on former marshland. It is laid out as a large grid of numbered superblocks divided by wide boulevards, a very different geometry from the old side. Farther along the Danube is Zemun, once a separate town with its own compact streets. Several bridges connect all three and tie the plan together.
The rivers also hold islands. Great War Island sits almost undeveloped at the confluence. Ada Ciganlija, on the Sava, has been turned into a lake and recreation area that locals often call the city's sea.
