Niš lies in the valley of the Nišava River in southern Serbia, at a historic crossroads of routes between Central Europe, the Aegean and Istanbul. The river crosses the city from east to west, and its gentle curve is the backbone of the map. On the northern bank stands the Niš Fortress, its angular Ottoman walls clearly visible from above.
The central town lies south of the river, organised around King Milan Square, with streets radiating outward and rising towards hills to the south. Bridges connect the two banks at regular intervals, and parks line parts of the waterfront.
Niš was the Roman city of Naissus, birthplace of Emperor Constantine the Great, and the remains of the imperial villa at Mediana lie to the east. The Skull Tower, a nineteenth-century monument, is another well-known site. A Niš map poster shows the layered city in a single calm view.
