Bellmore Map Poster & Print
Bellmore is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on the south shore of Long Island. From above it is a clear example of a south shore community: a regular pattern of suburban blocks north of the main roads, then, toward the south, streets that end at canals lined with houses and boat docks.
Past the canals, the land breaks up into marsh islands and channels opening onto the bays behind the barrier beaches. The main east-west roads, including Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road, cross the hamlet in parallel lines, and the Long Island Rail Road runs through on its way between New York City and the eastern suburbs.
A Bellmore map poster shows the gradual shift from land to water in one frame. The neat grid gives way to fingers of canal, and the canals give way to marsh and bay. That shift is what makes the south shore distinct, and it turns out very well in black and white.

Marsh and bay
Beyond the canals, marsh islands and winding channels open onto the south shore bays, leaving a wide, intricate water area on the print.
Parallel main roads
Sunrise Highway, Merrick Road and the rail line cross Bellmore east to west, giving the suburban grid a strong horizontal structure.
