Beni lies in North Kivu, in the far east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, almost exactly on the equator. The town spreads across rolling ground, and from above its streets look loose and irregular, following the landform rather than a strict plan. Houses and plots are surrounded by gardens and trees, so green space is everywhere.
A main road runs through Beni from south to north, linking it with Butembo and the other towns of the region, and it acts as the spine of the town. Smaller roads branch off it into the neighbourhoods. The airstrip adds one long straight line to an otherwise organic layout.
