Hoima is the main town of the Bunyoro region in western Uganda and the seat of the Omukama, the king of Bunyoro-Kitara. It sits on rolling ground on the plateau east of the escarpment that drops to Lake Albert. On a map the centre is a compact tangle of streets on a rise, with roads heading out in several directions across green farmland.
Beyond a small central grid the layout is informal, with neighbourhoods spreading along ridges and main roads rather than in regular blocks. The royal palace at Karuzika is one of the town's landmarks. On a Hoima map poster its grounds appear as a distinct open space among the surrounding streets.
In recent years Hoima has gained national attention as the hub of Uganda's oil developments in the Albertine region, and it became a city in 2020. Roads toward Lake Albert and the oil fields give the outer edges of the map long, purposeful lines leading west into open country.
