Berga is the capital of the Berguedà district in Catalonia, set on a slope where the plains of central Catalonia begin to rise into the pre-Pyrenees. From above, the old town is a tight tangle of narrow streets stepping up the hillside, with a newer grid extending across the flatter ground below. The Llobregat valley runs to the east, carrying roads north toward the mountains.
Above the town rises the hill of Sant Ferran, with the remains of a castle and fortifications that once guarded the approach. Higher still, on the mountain behind Berga, is the Sanctuary of Queralt, a well-known viewpoint over the valley. On the map, roads bend in switchbacks up these slopes, a pattern very different from the straighter streets lower down.
Berga is best known for La Patum, a festival held around Corpus Christi and recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, when fire, drums and giant figures fill the main square.
