Bern has one of the clearest city plans in Europe. Its old town occupies a long sandstone peninsula enclosed on three sides by a tight bend of the Aare, and its main streets run in parallel lines along the ridge from the Nydegg bridge toward the railway station. High bridges cross the river gorge to newer districts on the surrounding high ground, where the grid loosens into leafy residential quarters.
Founded in 1191, Bern is the seat of the Swiss federal government, and its old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. The Zytglogge clock tower, kilometres of arcaded streets, the Federal Palace above the river and the bear park at the eastern end are well known. Albert Einstein developed his early work on relativity while living here.

Parallel old-town streets
Gerechtigkeitsgasse, Kramgasse and Marktgasse follow one another along the spine of the peninsula. Lined with arcades and fountains, they form a clear sequence of long straight lines.
High bridges
The Kirchenfeld, Kornhaus and Nydegg bridges cross the gorge at different heights, linking the old centre to the districts above the river.
