Gstaad lies in the Saanenland, in the south-western Bernese Oberland, on the floor of a green Alpine valley. On the map it is small and loosely drawn. A handful of streets gather into a village centre, and roads and lanes spread along the valley and up the lower slopes, where chalets sit among pastures. Streams run down from the mountains and join in the valley.
The heart of the village is the Promenade, a largely car-free street of shops, hotels and wooden buildings. Local building rules have kept Gstaad in the chalet style for decades, so even its newer houses follow the traditional shape. That consistency shows from above as a pattern of small, evenly spaced footprints.
Gstaad is known as a winter resort, linked to several ski areas in the surrounding mountains, and as a summer destination for music. The Menuhin Festival, founded by the violinist Yehudi Menuhin in 1957, is held in the region's churches and a large festival tent.
