Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi sits on the western shore of the Dniester Estuary, a broad lagoon that dominates any map of the town. Along the waterline, the massive outline of the Akkerman Fortress forms an irregular polygon. Behind it, the streets are arranged in a fairly regular grid that climbs gently away from the shore. The open water of the estuary takes up much of the frame and gives the composition an unusual balance.
The site is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Ukraine. Greek colonists founded Tyras here in the sixth century BC. The fortress, built mainly in the medieval period and extended under Moldavian and Ottoman rule, is among the largest surviving in the country. Over the centuries the town has been known as Tyras, Moncastro, Akkerman and Cetatea Albă.
