Iași is spread over a series of hills above the valley of the Bahlui River in northeastern Romania. It is traditionally described as the city of seven hills. From above, the centre sits on a ridge, with long boulevards leading down to the river. Residential districts climb the surrounding slopes, and the streets follow the terrain rather than a strict grid.
The city was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia for centuries and remains a major cultural and academic centre. It is home to Romania's oldest university, founded in 1860. The Palace of Culture, with its neo-Gothic towers, stands at the southern end of the centre, and the Copou park to the north is associated with the poet Mihai Eminescu.
