Piatra Neamţ sits in a basin on the eastern side of the Carpathians, and on a map the hills are what you notice first. Streets fill the valley floor and climb only partway up the slopes before giving way to forest. The Bistrița River runs along the town's southern edge, widening where dams hold back its water, and the built area follows the valley in a long, uneven shape.
The town is ringed by named peaks, among them Cozla, Cernegura, Pietricica and Cârloman, and a cable car climbs from the centre to Cozla. In the old centre stands the princely court of Stephen the Great, with its stone bell tower from the late fifteenth century, one of the best known medieval landmarks in Moldavia.
