Sibiu lies in southern Transylvania on the Cibin River, with the Făgăraș Mountains on the southern horizon. A natural terrace divides its historic centre in two. The Upper Town holds the large squares and churches, and the Lower Town is a tighter web of streets reaching down toward the river. The map shows this division clearly, framed by the lines of the old fortifications.
Saxon settlers founded Sibiu in the Middle Ages, it became one of the principal towns of the region, and much of the old centre survives. Its roofs are known for small dormer windows that look like watching eyes. In 2007 Sibiu was a European Capital of Culture, which brought new attention to its restored squares and streets.
A Sibiu map poster shows the medieval core in rich detail. The Large Square, the Small Square and Huet Square sit close together, stairways and passages link the two levels, and remnants of walls and towers line the edges. Around the centre, later districts spread in more regular blocks toward the surrounding hills.

Three linked squares
The Large Square, the Small Square and Huet Square sit side by side at the heart of the Upper Town. They read as bright open shapes among the dense historic blocks.
Bridge of Lies
This cast-iron footbridge carries the Small Square over a street that descends to the Lower Town. It is a small but famous crossing where the city's two levels meet.
