Bingley lies in Airedale in West Yorkshire, between Keighley and Shipley, where the valley narrows and the moors climb steeply on both sides. From above, the town stretches along its transport lines. The River Aire meanders across the valley floor, while the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the railway keep straighter courses beside it.
The canal gives Bingley its best-known landmark, the Five Rise Locks. This staircase of five chambers lifts boats up the hillside and is often described as the steepest flight of its kind in Britain. The Three Rise Locks nearby make a smaller step. Stone terraces climb the slopes above, and Myrtle Park opens a green space beside the river.
