York stands where the River Foss joins the River Ouse, and those two waterways still shape the city seen from above. The Ouse cuts through the centre from northwest to southeast, crossed by a series of bridges. The Foss curves in from the east. Around the historic core runs a nearly complete circuit of medieval walls, pierced by gateways known as bars.
Founded by the Romans as Eboracum and later a major Viking town known as Jorvik, York has layers of history visible in its plan. The Minster rises at the northern corner of the walled city. Close by, the tightly packed lanes of the Shambles preserve a medieval street pattern.
