Doncaster grew at a crossing of the River Don, and the river still curves along the north side of the centre. From above, the town centre is a compact knot of older streets, with roads radiating outward to the surrounding towns and villages. The East Coast Main Line runs past the centre, and the wide spread of tracks and former works yards is one of the most distinctive shapes on the map.
Doncaster has deep railway roots. Its locomotive works built famous engines, including the Flying Scotsman and Mallard, the steam locomotive that still holds the world speed record for steam. The railway shaped the town's layout and its terraced housing districts, which appear as neat parallel streets close to the lines.
East of the centre, the racecourse forms a large open oval surrounded by roads and parkland. It hosts the St Leger, the oldest of Britain's classic horse races, first run in 1776.
