Blanes sits where the Costa Brava begins. Traditionally, the coast is said to start at Sa Palomera, a rocky outcrop that stands out into the sea from the town's beach. On the map, the long curve of the main beach sweeps up to that point. The old town packs its streets tightly behind the shoreline, and newer neighbourhoods spread inland and to the south.
To the south, the Tordera river reaches the sea across a flat, open delta, where the land turns into fields and campsites. To the north, the coast becomes steeper and more broken, with coves and pine-covered slopes. The Marimurtra botanical garden sits on the cliffs above the sea. Every summer the town holds a well-known international fireworks competition over the bay.
