Bohu, also known as Bagrash County, is in the Bayingolin area of Xinjiang, on the western edge of Bosten Lake, the region's largest freshwater lake. The county takes its name from the lake. On a map the town is a tidy grid of wide roads set among rectangular fields, and to the east the land dissolves into reed beds and open water.
The lake dominates any view of the area. Its shoreline is ragged and marshy rather than crisp, broken into channels, small lagoons and reed islands, and the Kaidu River feeds it from the west. Beyond the farmed oasis, dry country and the foothills of the Tian Shan frame the basin, so the settled land looks like a green island between desert and water.

The Kaidu River winds across the plain toward the lake and splits into channels as it nears the shore. Its meandering course contrasts with the straight roads of the town.
