Boké lies on the Rio Nuñez in western Guinea, not far from where the river widens toward the Atlantic. From above the town follows the river: its streets slope down toward the water, and beyond the centre the land opens into farmland, forest and the red roads of the surrounding region.
The town has a long history as a river port, and an old colonial-era fort on the bank now houses a museum. Today Boké is best known as the capital of the region that holds some of the largest bauxite reserves in the world, with mining and export routes to the coast shaping the wider area.
