Boksitogorsk lies in the east of Leningrad Oblast, surrounded by coniferous forest, bogs and small lakes. Its name comes from bauxite. The town was built in the Soviet period to mine the local deposits and process the ore into alumina, and the works and quarries still shape how it looks from above.
On a map, Boksitogorsk splits into two parts. One is a residential area of regular Soviet-era blocks and straight streets. The other is a large industrial zone with long rectangular buildings, rail sidings and the scars of open pits. Beyond both, the forest spreads out in all directions, broken only by roads, clearings and water.
