Boma la Ngombe lies in Kilimanjaro Region, west of Moshi, and is the administrative centre of Hai District. On a map the town follows the main road between Moshi and Arusha. Its core is arranged along that route, with smaller roads running north toward the mountain and south toward the plains. The layout is linear and open, typical of a town that grew along a highway.
The name is Swahili for a cattle enclosure, which recalls cattle-keeping in the area. Today the surrounding land is mostly farmed, with fields and smallholdings spread across the gently sloping ground below Kilimanjaro.
