Bondowoso lies inland in East Java, away from the coast, in a basin surrounded by mountains. The Ijen highlands rise to the east and the Argopuro range to the west, and on a map the town sits where roads from these uplands converge. Its centre is organised around a traditional alun-alun, the open square found at the heart of many Javanese towns.
Around the square, streets form a loose grid of shops, government buildings and houses, gradually giving way to villages, rice fields and plantations.
