Boston lies in the flat fen country of south Lincolnshire, a few miles inland from The Wash. From above, the landscape is defined by straight drains, long dykes and rectangular fields, and the town appears as a cluster of streets gathered along the River Witham, which widens as it runs southeast toward the sea past docks and a tidal sluice.
The town grew as a port in the medieval period, and the parish church of St Botolph still dominates it. Its tower, known locally as the Boston Stump, is one of the tallest in England and served as a landmark for sailors on the flat coast. The market place spreads out beside the church, the widest open space in the centre.
Boston is also tied to the early story of the Pilgrim Fathers, some of whom were held here after a failed attempt to leave England in 1607, and the larger Boston in Massachusetts takes its name from this town.
