Botataung is a township in central Yangon, lying along the northern bank of the Yangon River at the eastern end of the downtown area. Its map is defined by two elements: the broad river and its waterfront, and the rigorous street grid laid out in the colonial era, with long east–west roads crossed by numbered and named streets at close, regular intervals.
The township takes its name from the Botataung Pagoda, which stands near the riverbank. The pagoda was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt afterward, and unusually its stupa is hollow, so visitors can walk inside. Its position close to the water makes it one of the landmarks that anchors the waterfront on a map of the city.
