Bouarfa is the capital of Figuig Province, in the Oriental region of eastern Morocco, not far from the Algerian border. It sits on the high, dry plateau where the land starts to give way to the Sahara. From above, the town is a compact block of streets on open, almost empty ground. Rocky ridges rise nearby, and there is very little vegetation to blur the edges.
The town grew in the twentieth century, largely around the mining of manganese in the surrounding hills. It also became the end point of the long railway line running south from Oujda. That history shows in the map's straightforward layout: regular streets and practical blocks, with roads leaving in a few directions across the plateau.
