Boulogne-sur-Mer is built in two levels. On the hill stands the haute ville, a rectangle of streets still enclosed by thirteenth-century ramparts, which on a map form a sharp-edged frame. Inside rises the domed basilica of Notre-Dame. Below, the lower town slopes down to the mouth of the Liane, where the river widens into docks and harbour basins.
The harbour is the main feature of the coast here. Long breakwaters push into the Channel, and the quays of France's largest fishing port form a series of basins. North of the harbour, the beach and the Nausicaá aquarium sit on the seafront, and the coast continues toward the chalk cliffs of the Opal Coast.
