The Grand River defines Brantford's layout. It enters from the north, swings in wide bends past the downtown and continues southeast. The older core sits on high ground beside one of these bends, and neighbourhoods spread outward on both banks, joined by a small number of bridges. Highway 403 crosses the northern part of the city as a long, clean curve.
Brantford is widely known as the Telephone City. Alexander Graham Bell's family homestead is on the edge of town, and it was here that he worked out the idea of the telephone in 1874. The city is also Wayne Gretzky's hometown, and a street and a sports centre carry his name. The Six Nations of the Grand River territory lies just to the southeast.
