Bruay-la-Buissière is in the Pas-de-Calais, part of northern France's old coal basin. From above, it does not have a single centre. It is a patchwork of mining estates, known as cités, with repeated rows of identical houses and gardens. The small river Lawe runs through the town, and former slag heaps rise nearby as distinctive landforms.
The Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining basin is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and Bruay retains notable parts of that legacy. The Cité des Électriciens, a restored miners' housing estate, is now a heritage and cultural centre. The town also has an Art Deco swimming pool from the 1930s, a rare survivor of its kind.
