Buchen lies in the Neckar-Odenwald district of northern Baden-Württemberg, where the wooded Odenwald hills meet the more open farmland of the Bauland to the east. From above, the town has a compact historic centre, once enclosed by walls, with newer residential districts spreading around it and a scattering of villages belonging to the municipality set among the fields and forests beyond.
The old town's best-known landmark is the Stadtturm, a medieval gate tower that still marks the entrance to the centre. Within the municipal area lies the Eberstadt dripstone cave, a limestone show cave discovered in the early 1970s during quarrying work. Buchen is also known in the region for its traditional Fastnacht carnival.
