Büdingen lies on the eastern edge of the Wetterau in Hesse, at the foot of the Vogelsberg uplands. It has one of the best-preserved medieval town fortifications in Germany, and on the map the old town is unmistakable: a compact, closed shape of narrow streets enclosed by a continuous line of walls, towers and gates.
The most famous of these is the Jerusalem Gate, a massive late-Gothic gate from the early sixteenth century with two round towers. Within the walls stands Büdingen Castle, the residence of the Princes of Ysenburg and Büdingen, which has grown over the centuries from a moated castle into a large, irregular complex.
